Why is it important to link PAN and Aadhaar?
The law to link PAN with Aadhaar was introduced in the 2017 budget. A new section 139AA was added under the Income Tax Act.
As per section 139AA, every person who has been allotted PAN as on 1st July 2017 and is eligible to obtain Aadhaar number, shall be required to link his PAN with Aadhaar. If PAN is not linked to Aadhaar before the due date expires, then PAN will become inactive.
It is mandatory to mention Aadhaar number while filing Income Tax Return (ITR File) and also while applying for new PAN under section 139AA.
Change in Law: Aadhaar Card PAN Card – Link
When the law was brought, not linking PAN with Aadhaar (Aadhar Pan Card Link) used to invalidate PAN! This would mean that PAN was not issued to the person earlier. However, the word ‘invalid’ was replaced with ‘inactive’ to preserve the validity of the transactions done earlier.
UIDAI has issued this information to all Aadhar Card holders! Aadhaar can be linked with PAN card by sending a message to 567678 or 56161 to use the SMS service.
